Sensory Design Ideas for Bringing in the Essence of Summer
Bringing in the essence of summer through sensory design can create a vibrant and refreshing atmosphere. You can read more about sensory design in my previous blog post, “Awareness Through the Senses” HERE.
Research shows by engaging our senses can provide many health benefits. This includes relieving stress, increasing our energy levels, boosting joy, and promoting health. Our body’s tactile memory of its environment plays an intricate role in imprinting our mind. In other words, our senses give us a unique way to experience the world and can imprint it into our memory.

Here are some ideas to incorporate the sights, sounds, smells, textures, and tastes of summer into your design:
Visuals:
Use a bright and lively color palette inspired by the vibrant hues of summer, such as shades of yellow, orange, turquoise, and green.
Integrate natural elements like flowers, tropical plants, and beach-inspired decor to create a summery ambiance.
Hang up colorful summer-themed artwork, photographs of beach scenes, or surfboards as wall decor.
Sounds:
Play upbeat and tropical music or create a summer playlist with songs that evoke a sense of relaxation and vacation.
Install a small water fountain or a tabletop waterfall to introduce the soothing sounds of trickling water.
Open windows or use fans to bring in the sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves.
Smells:
Incorporate scented candles, diffusers, or essential oils with fragrances that remind you of summer, such as coconut, pineapple, citrus, or fresh-cut grass.
Place fresh flowers or bowls of potpourri with floral scents around your space.
Consider adding indoor plants known for their pleasant aromas, like lavender or jasmine.
Textures:
Opt for lightweight and breezy fabrics for curtains, drapes, and throw pillows, like linen or sheer materials, to evoke a sense of airiness.
Use natural materials like rattan, wicker, or bamboo for furniture or decor pieces to bring in a tropical feel.
Incorporate tactile elements such as soft beach towels, woven rugs, or seashells in your design to add texture and interest.
Tastes:
Set up a refreshing drink station with a variety of fruit-infused water, iced tea, or lemonade options.
Display bowls of fresh fruits like watermelon, berries, or tropical fruits on the kitchen counter or dining table.
Arrange a small indoor herb garden to have fresh herbs like mint, basil, or rosemary within reach, adding a burst of fragrance and flavor.
When we tap into our senses, we provide a powerful technique for all aspects of healing, by using all our resources in our living spaces, we can create a positive healing environment to thrive in. Holistic Sensory Design can be a powerful tool for making your home a safe and beautiful space.
