6 Sensory Design Ideas That Can Promote Mental Health

Sensory design refers to the deliberate use of environmental stimuli to create a desired experience or response from individuals. This can include the use of colors, textures, lighting, sounds, and other sensory inputs to influence how people feel and behave in each environment.

When it comes to mental health, sensory design can play an important role in creating environments that promote well-being and reduce stress. For example, research has shown that exposure to natural light and nature can have a positive impact on mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Similarly, incorporating calming colors, such as blues and greens, and using soft textures can help create a sense of relaxation and comfort.

On the other hand, poorly designed environments that are loud, chaotic, or overly stimulating can contribute to feelings of stress, anxiety, and even panic. For individuals with mental health conditions, these types of environments can be particularly overwhelming and trigger negative emotions or behaviors.

I personally had to leave a pervious apartment I used to live in because it was made of mostly marble and poorly insulated. This wreaked havoc on my nervous system from all the extra stimulation, imagine what it does to our pets who have supersonic hearing? I of course, had to move and was much happier when I left.

In summary, sensory design can have a significant impact on mental health and well-being. By intentionally designing environments that promote relaxation, comfort, and positivity, we can create spaces that support mental health and contribute to overall wellness.

Here are 6 sensory design ideas that can help promote better mental health:

1. Use natural materials: Incorporating natural materials, such as wood, stone, and plants, can create a calming and grounding effect. This can help reduce stress and anxiety and promote a sense of well-being. Fabrics like: wool, cotton, Jute, hemp, bamboo, and sisel.

2. Create a comfortable space: Use soft textures, comfortable furniture, and warm lighting to create a cozy and comfortable space. This can help promote relaxation and reduce feelings of tension. Use daylight bulbs, colored bulbs, and circadian lighting. You can also get an alarm clock like the Hatch.

3. Add calming scents: Scent can have a powerful impact on mood and emotions. Adding calming scents, such as lavender or chamomile, can help reduce stress and promote relaxation.

4. Use natural light: Natural light can have a positive impact on mood and mental health. Try to incorporate as much natural light as possible into your space, and consider using light-colored walls and furniture to reflect light and create a brighter atmosphere.

5. Reduce noise: Loud and constant noise can be stressful and overwhelming. Consider using sound-absorbing materials, such as curtains or rugs, to reduce noise levels and create a quieter environment. Use noise cancellation headset like Bose when needing more focus quiet time around others.

6. Use soothing colors: Colors can have a significant impact on mood and emotions. Consider using calming colors, such as blue, green, or pastels, to promote relaxation and reduce stress.

Overall, sensory design can be a powerful tool in promoting better mental health. By creating a calm, comfortable, and inviting environment, we can help reduce stress and promote a sense of well-being.
