Celebrating the Year of the Dragon: Tips, Ideas, and Inspirations for a Prosperous New Year

It’s almost here! We are about to celebrate the next Chinese Year cycle, this prosperous Year of the Dragon, a symbol of power, strength, and good luck in Chinese culture. This day can be celebrated with various design ideas that honor this majestic creature and the festive spirit of the Lunar New Year.

On Feb 10, 2024, over a billion people in China and millions worldwide will celebrate the Lunar New Year. This is a very anticipated cycle as we are still coming out of this pandemic and need this positive energy. With the start of this time approaching, homeowners who are preparing for festive feasts ahead should look to featuring such auspicious motifs to herald that desirable sense of prosperity and good fortune.

I have a huge affinity for Asian culture, especially as a practitioner of Chinese Medicine and being able to study this as a Master’s degree, but before this, I loved Asian décor. As I sit and renew my acupuncture license this month, I can’t help but reminisce about all the amazing things I learned about Asian culture, from health practices and especially interior design.

One of my favorite styles in Interior Design school was Chinoiserie design. This is a style that mixes styles of Rococo flourishes to create fanciful, exotic designs that were highly prized for their beauty and intricacy. This is what I love about Interior design, it is deeply influenced by culture.

This diversity leads to a rich variety of design practices and preferences around the world, some of my favorite design styles are global home styling. If you want to read more about this topic read my previous blog here:

Always remember though, what’s considered beautiful or functional in one culture might not be in another.

Chinoiserie dates to a European artistic style that emerged in the 17th century and gained peak popularity in the 18th century. It reflects a European interpretation and imitation of Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions, especially in the context of decoration, furniture, and architecture. It’s known for its depictions of fantastical landscapes, mythical creatures, and daily life scenes that Europeans associated with the East, including dragons, pagodas, bamboo, lotus flowers, and scenes of leisure. We can incorporate some of these motifs in your space to bring your dragon energy.
