Let’s Go Coastal This Summer.

Ocean-inspired interior design can create a tranquil and refreshing atmosphere reminiscent of the seaside. The goal is to create a space that reflects the calming and refreshing qualities of the ocean while providing a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Plus, by designing in this way, we can initiate support of any sustainable practices and conservation efforts.

Sustainability is crucial for the long-term health and preservation of our oceans. The health and well-being of our planet and all its inhabitants are interconnected with the health of our oceans. Saving the oceans is essential for the marine life that calls it home and for humanity and the sustainable future we strive for.

We can positively impact the health and future of our oceans by just making a conscious effort, to reduce plastic and engage in beach clean-ups. Saving our oceans also requires collective action and a multi-faceted approach.

Here are several key strategies and actions that can contribute to the conservation and preservation of our oceans.

  • Reduce plastic pollution: Plastic pollution poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Reduce your use of single-use plastics, such as bags, bottles, and straws. Opt for reusable alternatives and support initiatives that promote recycling and waste management.

  • Conserve water: Practice water conservation in your daily life. By reducing water usage, you help maintain healthy freshwater sources that eventually flow into the oceans.

  • Support sustainable fishing practices: Overfishing is a major concern. Choose sustainably sourced seafood and support fishing practices that avoid destructive techniques like bottom trawling and bycatch.

  • Minimize ocean acidification: Reduce carbon emissions and support initiatives aimed at mitigating climate change. Ocean acidification, caused by the absorption of excess carbon dioxide by seawater, is detrimental to marine life.

  • Protect coastal habitats: Coastal ecosystems, such as mangroves, coral reefs, and salt marshes, are vital for the health of oceans. Support initiatives that protect and restore these habitats, as they provide nurseries, buffer against storms, and sequester carbon.

  • Promote marine protected areas (MPAs): Advocate for establishing and expanding marine protected areas. These designated zones help conserve biodiversity, rebuild fish populations, and protect vulnerable species and habitats.

  • Engage in responsible tourism: When visiting coastal areas or engaging in water-based activities, ensure you follow responsible tourism practices. Respect marine wildlife, avoid damaging habitats, and support local conservation efforts.

  • Educate and raise awareness: Spread knowledge about ocean conservation through education and awareness campaigns. Encourage others to act and make sustainable choices.

  • Support research and innovation: Support scientific research and innovation aimed at understanding and addressing the challenges faced by our oceans. This includes studying marine ecosystems, developing sustainable technologies, and finding alternative solutions to harmful practices.

  • Engage in policy advocacy: Encourage stronger local, national, and international environmental policies and regulations. Support organizations working towards sustainable ocean management.

You can do it! But how?

Incorporate do-it-yourself projects into your design changes. Explore simple crafts, painting techniques, or upcycling furniture ideas. Engaging in hands-on activities can be both enjoyable and rewarding as you see your personal touch come to life.

1. Look for design inspiration from various sources such as magazines, websites, social media platforms, or even nature.

2. Create mood boards or Pinterest boards to collect images, colors, patterns, and textures that resonate with your style and vision.

Any of these design ideas below can adapt to suit your style and preferences, so play with some options below and create your oceanic paradise:

§  Color palette: Use a soothing color palette inspired by the ocean. Shades of blue, green, and sandy neutrals can evoke a sense of calm and serenity. Consider using lighter hues for walls and furniture, while incorporating pops of vibrant colors like coral or turquoise as accents.

§  Nautical elements: Incorporate nautical-inspired elements such as ropes, anchors, or boat steering wheels. You can use them as decorative items, artwork, or even as functional pieces like drawer pulls or light fixtures.

§  Coastal materials: Choose natural materials commonly found near the ocean. For example, incorporate seagrass rugs, jute or rope-wrapped furniture, and driftwood accents. These materials add texture and bring a coastal vibe to your space.

§  Coastal patterns: Use patterns inspired by the ocean, such as stripes, waves, or seashells. Incorporate these patterns through throw pillows, curtains, or wallpaper. A subtle wave pattern on an accent wall can add a unique touch.

§  Seashells and beach treasures: Display seashells, starfish, or coral as decorative pieces. You can arrange them in a glass jar, create a wall art collage, or even incorporate them into a tabletop centerpiece. Just make sure these items are ethically sourced and not taken from protected areas.

§  Natural light and views: Maximize natural light in your space to create an airy and open feeling. Use sheer curtains or blinds that allow sunlight to filter through. If you have a view of the ocean or a water body, arrange your furniture to take advantage of the scenery.

§  Ocean-inspired artwork: Hang artwork that depicts marine life, seascapes, or coastal landscapes. It could be a painting, photograph, or even a large-scale mural. These pieces can be a focal point in the room and add a touch of oceanic beauty.

§  Water features: Consider adding a small indoor water feature, such as a tabletop fountain or a fish tank. The sound and sight of flowing water can enhance the ocean ambiance and create a soothing atmosphere.

§  Beachy textiles: Incorporate beach-themed textiles like linen or cotton fabrics in light, breezy textures. Use them for curtains, upholstery, or throw blankets to add a coastal touch to your furniture.

§ Coastal accessories: Decorate with beach-inspired accessories like woven baskets, coastal-themed wall clocks, maritime-inspired mirrors, or seashell-shaped table lamps. These small touches can tie the entire ocean theme together.
