Paris Design Week 2023 - On Trend towards Sustainability

I have been looking through all the design events going on this month being that it’s my birthday month and Virgo season is officially here.

Bring in the Fall SEASON!

I did see that Paris’ design week for 2023 falls on the week of Sept 7th and has some the sustainable themes I have been mentioning all year long. One thing that has been catching my eye is sustainability all around the world.

What is Paris Design Week?

Maison & Objet launched this event since 2010, to generate a wider appreciation for the design industry throughout the City of Lights. Paris Design Week is a celebration of creativity, talent, and innovation taking place in four districts across the capital. Paris Design Week 2023 returns with its collection of events, exhibitions, and new presentations from French and many other international brands during a week in January and again in September each year.

I ventured through Paris earlier this year in January, I was able to see firsthand had some of the most amazing art and designs pieces. From Paris’s most renowned artistic displays of the Architectural Museum, the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Museum de Orsay and of course, the world-famous Louvre and so much more! One thing was in common beauty and design were everywhere, talk about inspiration.

As I made my way through the Parisian streets, I found myself reflecting on all the aspects of design I studied while in design school. I loved the architectural museum the most and always dreamed of going to architectural school in Europe, or at least drawing in these museums as I saw some students doing. I would sneak a peek at the class and at what the students were drawing. This is what really inspired me to take these drawing classes this summer, and I have been having a blast revisiting my skills and really enjoying my drawing artist again, like all things it’s muscle memory, and a lot of practice but more to come on this a bit later.

In the middle of all the museum hoping and daydreaming, I did see that the design week was going on and I wanted to attend but already had other plans in place, But I was able to see the projects that won the Global Architectural Design Awards for Sustainability in Paris, and that was amazing, so stay tuned for that.

Guess what also was on trend for this year’s fall Maison et objet 2023?

Well, as I searched the design trends for fall 2023 presented at this year’s show featured the future of living will concentrate on a few key sustainable aspects: comfortable and raw materials, a slower more cocooned life, self-care, local artisan pieces, geometric patterns, and furniture as art.

Not only were more holistic practices of living mention, but this slower paced more mindful approach to life, we will see these nestled spaces for recovery and more self-care. As I have already mentioned these wellness corners, dual-purpose rooms, and mixed-use spaces.

Regarding the slow living and environmental concerns, more hand-crafted artisan revival trends are spotlighted, and participants are encouraged to support these local artisans to cut back on the carbon footprint. These handmade crafted pieces of furniture are showcased as pieces of art also known as “furniture as art”.

We also see the revival of antiques and vintage styles making a comeback, a trend I absolutely love and personally own many antique world pieces myself! I always promote a well styled home from pieces of furniture from all over the world, this is sustainability at its finest.

The future of living will stay on trend with it also be showcasing raw and comfort martials such as wood, marble, travertine, and other rich natural materials spotlighted in the interiors. These naturals materials were on my mind 25 years ago as an allergy free way of living, I am happy to see it is a trend come back but realistically needs to be a way of life permanently don’t you think?

Also, as I mentioned the before, one of the global critical issues of space cooling and thermal regulation in my previous blog from this year’s ASID event, Design Sur Cours will have a focus on urban spaces. This event will explore solutions to deal with global warming, specifically the adjustments that will be necessary for urban design planning. When it’s 50 degree C in the city, how can residents cool down? Is it possible to improve our relationship with nature in urban areas? Yes, and all the solions for this is coming! I already talked about grass walls and many other thermal regulations that are vital for our urban planning future.

You can see it all HERE on their website. I hope to go to next year’s event! f you’re planning to visit Paris in September 2018, then you need this Paris Design Week: The Ultimate Guide that Design Home has recommended. You can see it here.

We are on our way to make this Sustainability tend a permanent reality, well it’s about TIME!
